Thomas participated in BASF Kids Lab on July 4th. This is the second time he joined the activity. The first time was 2 years ago when BASF first launched this "community project" in Taiwan. Thomas was one of the eight "models" on stage, he even had his picture published on the newspaper. However, he was too small to get a feel of the chemistry experiments.
The actual Kids Lab is open to the publc, needs to register on line, conducts only three experiments per session and limits one session per person per year. However, BASF needs to conduct a rehearsal for the college volunteers to go through all the experiments before the actual lab. The rehearsal is only open to employees, key customers or employees' relatives or friends. Mommy took the advantage and registered 10 of Thomas classmates in the program, so Thomas had plenty of company that day.
The kids need to wear goggles and apron like in all chemistry experiments. Each college volunteer takes care of 4 to 6 kids. There originally are 9 experiments, including DIY hair gel, making lotion, where is vitamin C, the acid/basic concept, making recycled paper, comparing superabsorber with sponge and paper towel, paper chromatography, creative usage of activated charcoal and making slime ball. However, the slime experiment has been cancelled by Germany headquarters at the end of June worldwide because of the possible toxic concern of the boric solution used.
Thomas seemed to enjoy the experiments this time, maybe because he is old enough to understand what the experiments are about and also because he is surrounded by his classmates. The kids are all very proud of the hair gel and the body lotion they made. It is an good opportunity to introduce them to the world of chemistry. Oh, the green thing at the back of Thomas is the global mascot for BASF Kids Lab, the "chimney" on top of his head is suppose to resemble a test tube.
The Kids Lab was held at the National Taiwan Science Educational Center, so there were plenty of activities going on inside. Thomas took a quick tour after the Lab ended at 3 (started at 10 am). There were some fun games and displays.

How cool! Looked like the kids really enjoyed it. I would have wanted to join even as an adult - to learn how hair gel or lotion is made!
Why a chimney as a mascot?
The last photo looked interesting....where was the girl behind Thomas standing?
Not a chimney, it is a "test tube" that somehow looks like a chimney.
Ha, Thomas is actualy behind mirrors. If he has stood and not climbed on top of the platform, you would see a person with only a head floadig in the air.....
